Vuselela Ulwazi Lwakho Drop – In Centre
Status = Mediated Projects: (to whom we have made a mentoring contribution)
Type of Project
Gauteng, Diepsloot - North of Johannesburg
Pro∙Vision International (PVI) has completed its involvement in the VCT (Voluntary Counselling & Testing) facility project at Vuselela Ulwazi Lwakho Drop-In Centre (VULDIC). Both organisations believe that a point has been reached where PVI’s efforts may now be directed to other organisations. PVI congratulates VULDIC on its achievements to date and trusts that it will grow from strength to strength in terms of meeting the challenges of HIV/AIDS in Diepsloot.
A community project for HIV/Aids awareness and prevention advocacy and voluntary counselling and testing for HIV/AIDS. Diepsloot is home to 90 000 people, about 65% of whom are unemployed. The project is the initiative of Mrs Cecilia Sato; ‘Vuselela Ulwazi Lwakho’ means ‘Revive your knowledge’.
Individuals and groups in the community are motivated to learn more about the disease, its spread, how to prevent and manage it. Counselling aims to alleviate pain and physical discomfort and to give psychological support, reassurance and counselling for the infected and affected.
Information is dispersed in a socially and culturally relevant nature, passed on verbally and graphically to those who are illiterate. This is done by means of community groups, drama, one to one counselling, magazines, pamphlets, audiotapes and videotapes. Teaching takes place at the Centre, in schools, churches and in the community.
