Ashby Manor - Intliziyo Project
Status = Mediated Projects: (to whom we have made a mentoring contribution)
Type of Project
HIV/AIDS and Skills Development
Queenstown, Eastern Cape
The Eastern Cape is a predominantly rural province, and is the poorest in SA. It is also rated amongst the leading provinces highly affected by the scourge of HIV/AIDS. Over 35% of African males and females have received no secondary school qualifications; of those who are available for and desire to work, the unemployment rate is higher in the EC than SA as a whole.
This programme aims to provide income generating skills and counselling to PWA’s (persons living with AIDS), and educational / prevention programmes to the community at large. Many of those vulnerable to AIDS are either poorly educated or in denial. Due to poorly developed infrastructure, a pandemic is now being faced, which is paradoxically resulting in a growing indifference due to a lack of structured programmes. Structures besides those of government need to become a platform of care, after care and competency development.
Although the project is not fully operational yet, it aims to focus on the following:
Prevention; raising awareness, stimulation of ethical reflection and dialogue, distribution of material
Training; counselling, home based care, food production and nutrition, facilitation and presentation skills for PWAs
Care and Support; Psycho-social care, VCT, Income generating projects, art therapy, hospice facilities
Impact Mitigation; orphan relief, support of those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS
Advocacy; Making use of Provincial, National and International advocacy channels to defend the interest of those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.
